ますます／どんどん

どんどん refers to an action, movement, or phenomenon that is carried out energetically or with notable progress. For instance, the sentence 彼女（かのじょ）はどんどん歩（ある）いて行った means “she kept walking on at a steady pace.” This is different from 速（はや）く歩く, where the focus in only on speed. ますます, on the other hand, suggests an increase or acceleration in some quality (e.g., speed, tendency, force, degree) in relation to some previously metioned or inferred point. For example, 成長（せいちょう）して、彼女（かのじょ）はますますきれいになった (“Growing up, she has gotten prettier and prettier”) suggests that she was pretty even as a child.

川の水がどんどん増えてきている。

Kawa no mizu ga dondon fuete kite iru.

The water in the river keeps on increasing.

トムは、日本女性と結婚して、ますます日本語が上達した。

Tomu wa, Nihon josei to kekkon shite, masumasu Nihongo ga jōtatsu shita.

Since Tom married a Japanese woman, his Japanese has gotten better and better.

ソニアは、ますますお母さんに似てきましたね。

Sonia wa, masumasu okāsan ni nite kimashita ne.

Sonia looks more and more like her mother.
